At Fossdene Primary School, we follow a mastery approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics. We aim to ensure that all children develop a deep understanding of maths and are aware of the relevance and application of maths in the real world meaning that they are competent and confident mathematicians for life.
We use the White Rose Maths mastery approach to underpin the national curriculum. This ensures that we have number at the heart of our curriculum and we spend time reinforcing number to build competency. It also ensures that we provide many opportunities for children to reason mathematically using accurate mathematical language and for children to solve problems through applying their mathematical knowledge and understanding to a variety of real life situations.
When children are introduced to a new concept in their lessons they build competency through using a variety of concrete objects and manipulatives, and pictorial representations. These are used to support a deep understanding of mathematical structures and to help children reason and problem solve with confidence.
Through adopting the White Rose mantra at Fossdene we aim to shape assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who enjoy the challenge of maths. Through this, we hope our children become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in maths but support them across the curriculum.
Times tables and number are the foundations of maths. We use Times Tables Rockstars to help children develop their times tables knowledge. Through regular use of the activities, TT Rockstars has had a great impact on improving times tables skills.
